I just finished re-watching one of my favorite movies, Courage Under Fire. Hopefully, most of us will never have to experience first hand the fierce pressure of being in a military battle. The ones we face reside not on the battlefield but in our mind. Recently I received a letter from someone very dear to me in which they questioned nearly everything I believe in. The “war” in my mind was over whether to downplay the conviction of my beliefs in order to “keep” their love or, use this opportunity to calmly and lovingly stand firm in the truth of who I really am, hoping that sharing what I truly believe will be helpful and open the door to further communication, knowing full well that it could alienate them even further. I began to see that this wasn’t a war between us. It was a stand-off between the part of me that feared losing them and the fear of losing my self. But, if I’m not true to myself, who will be, and what but an empty shell will remain to be loved?
