Are you sometimes sad over the loss of a loved one? I believe that they are always trying to connect with us and that if we can’t hear them, it’s not because they aren’t trying. It’s because we don’t always know how to listen. Often, the signs are all around us if we just pay attention.
The other evening I began thinking that I had somehow lost the deep connection I have always felt with my dad since he passed away many years ago. Later that same evening, I followed an impulse to turn on the radio which I rarely do at night. The very first song that played was a Paul Simon song that I love and hadn’t heard for probably a year. Paul was also my father’s name and the song is about a father speaking to his daughter. The chorus says:
I’m gonna watch you shine, gonna watch you grow,
Gonna paint the signs so you’ll always know,
As long as one and one are two,
There has never been a father who loved his daughter more than I love you.
If that wasn’t enough to bring tears of joy to my eyes…….the very next song, by the Supremes, was Some Day, We’ll Be Together. What a beautiful reminder that my dad is still always with me (in spirit for now.) The loss of connection was only in my mind.
