I’d like to share a story about a compliment I received – not to brag, but to illustrate a point.

I have a lovely neighbor that I stop and chat with on occasion when I’m out walking. We don’t see each other often, but there always seems to be a nice connection between us. During a recent conversation, she said, “There is something about you . . . what is it about you? I know!” she said. “Whenever I see you, it feels like I see God smiling.”

Putting my ego aside (yes, it took a while to do that!) I started thinking about the deeper meaning of what she said. A Course in Miracles says that the Kingdom of Heaven isn’t just within us. It says that the Kingdom is us! We are each part of the light of God that is shining in this world. So, perhaps, we need to stop waiting for God to smile upon us and let Him smile through us instead. The world will be better for it.

Recently, I had to take time out of my already busy day to shop for a product to solve a persistent household problem. I ended up having to drive much further than I had anticipated and then the product I bought didn’t solve the problem anyways. Feeling myself getting annoyed and frustrated, I decided to quiet my mind and ask my higher self, “What was this for?” Instantly, I heard, Did you enjoy the ride? Hmmmm. The voice continued, because, if you didn’t, then you surely wasted your time. I thought back. Had I been fully present and enjoying each moment of that ride, or was I seeing it as only a means to an end, totally focused on the future outcome? Thankfully, I could say that, for the most part, I did enjoy the ride. That’s when I realized that, regardless of the outcome . . . it was time well spent.

A friend called, asking me to help her not go into “panic mode” over a situation in her life. As I listened to her bring up all her old fear-based thoughts, I found myself saying out loud, “This is a test. It is only a test of the Emergency Broadcasting System.” We both laughed.

A Course in Miracles tells us that we can only choose between listening to two voices and only one of them is real. There is the voice for God that resides within each of us and speaks only of love and peace, or there is the ego’s voice which only broadcasts emergencies: you’re going to be late; there isn’t enough; something will go wrong; you’ll never get it right . . . It delights when we are afraid.

Perhaps, the next time I go down that fearful road myself, I will remember that I have a choice which voice I listen to. I will remind myself that, This is a test. It is only a test . . .
